100% Handmade Music Volume
IV, the fourth in our series of Acoustic Disc samplers, again underscores
the diversity of this growing label with music ranging from contemporary
folk to classic swing to chamber jazz and-for another first-even comedy.
Featuring two cuts
each from seven previous albums, this sampler offers examples from Doc
& Dawg, the collection of intimate after-dinner jams by Doc Watson and
David Grisman. For more Americana, there are twin tracks from Breakdown
by the legendary bluegrass band Old & In the Way. Two special releases
document the music of incredible swing musicians who have gone unheralded
for too long. On The Man with the Mandolin by Dave Apollon and Oscar Alem·n's
Swing Guitar Masterpieces, we are treated to historic overviews of careers
that spanned the '30s, '40s and '50s. Both titles are two CD sets and
come with 20-page illustrated booklets.
Mandolin hero Jethro
Burns is represented by two tunes from Bye Bye Blues, a collection of
swing and contemporary jazz standards played as dazzling mandolin/guitar
duets. And Matt Eakle steps out of his role as flutist for the David Grisman
Quintet to present Flute Jazz, an exploration of chamber jazz by a tight,
drumless trio.
Speaking of drummers,
Hal Blaine, "The Worlds Most Recorded Musician," adds a new element to
the Acoustic Disc array with Buh-Doom!, a comedy collection developed
during Hal's forty years in the music business. As a special treat, there
is a bonus cut of Jimmie Rodgers' classic "Blue Yodel #9" as recorded
by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman during Jerry's final session.
